Can You Use Your Cookware For Induction Cooking?

You’re interested in trying out induction cooking and wondering if your current pots and pans are actually cookware for induction. But you don’t want to go out and buy a new cookware set, but you can check if your current cookware is compatible with induction cooking. The reason why you need to check is because induction cooking uses magnetic forces to cook your food, which means you need something that’s magnetic. So here’s a brief list of metals that will and will not work with induction cooking. Also always make sure that when you purchase a new cookware set, that it will work on an induction   cooktop .

Magnetic metals found in common cookware:

1. Cast Iron – I seriously love my cast iron skillet, and I love the fact that it’s compatible with induction  cooktop !

2. Enamel Cast Iron – It’s essentially cast iron mixed with enamel. I actually prefer the enamel cast iron cookware because cast iron alone can be very rough on your  cooktop  and leave scratches on your glass induction  cooktop . But you the enamel smooth out the cast iron, which helps maintain your  cooktop  without losing its magnetic properties.

3. Some Stainless Steel – Most stainless steel cookware will work with induction cooking except for those that are mixed with aluminum. An example is the All-Clad MC2 line of cookware will not work. You can always test it with a magnet.

1. Glass cookware

2. Copper cookware

3. Aluminum cookware

How to check if it your cookware is compatible with induction?

So if you’re not sure what your pots and pans are made of, there really is a very simple test to see if it’s compatible. If you happen to have a magnet around such as a fridge magnet, place it on the bottom of your cookware and see if it clings. Also make note of how strongly it clings on to the top because the stronger the pull, the better for induction cooking.

Don’t have an induction compatible cookware?

Don’t toss out the cookware set you got as a wedding gift just yet. They’ve come out with a product, called an interface induction disc, which allows you to use any cookware with your induction  cooktop . You just need to place between the  cooktop  and your cookware and you’ll still be able to use your beautiful aluminum cookware. You can purchase an induction interface disc for around $20 at Amazon.

Grab that magnet and make sure that your pots and pans are cookware for induction.
