But even if you have only a regular range and oven, there are ways by which you can keep grease and stain from accumulating on them. Here are 11 ways to keep your oven stain-free:


• Before using an electric element, line the tray beneath with aluminum foil. The foil should be able to effectively catch whatever boils over, and all you have to do is change the foil.


• When using the oven, you can prevent food from splattering by covering the dish with foil. For broiling purposes, you can also line the bottom of the broiler pan with foil.


• Clean as you go along. Spatters turn into stains if you leave them there for a long time. So, to keep the range free from stain and marks, wipe up spatters as soon as they occur. Use a damp cloth or sponge.


• After every major cooking session, give your cooktop a thorough cleaning. Dislodge all removable parts of the cooktop, such as burners and metal liner trays, and wash them in hot sudsy water. Then use a nonabrasive cleaner to give the entire surface of the range a good wipe-down. Remove stubborn stains with a nylon scouring pad. Don’t scrape with a sharp object, or you damage the surface of the range.


• Use hot water and liquid detergent to clean enamel surfaces. If there are stubborn stains, rub gently with a very fine steel wool. You may scratch the enamel if you rub more strongly.


• If there are burned-on marks on nondetachable electric elements, clean them with a stiff wire brush.


• Remedy burned-on grease in an electric oven with ammonia. Pour full-strength ammonia in a bowl and leave it inside the oven overnight. The fumes of the ammonia will penetrate the grease and soften it, so that the next day, you need only to spray on more ammonia and wipe the burned-on grease away.


• Another way to clean burned-on grease in the oven is to sprinkle baking soda on the walls and floor of a warm oven. Let it stay that way for an hour, then wipe clean.


• To remove baked-on grease in gas ovens, scrub with an abrasive cleaner.


• Give your oven a complete cleaning every once in a while. Use new commercial oven cleaners which are non-toxic and are easily sprayed on. You can also use traditional oven cleaners but, since they are caustic, make sure you wear rubber gloves when you use them. You also need to protect the floor by lining it with newspaper, and then cover the light bulbs, heating elements and thermostats with aluminum foil.


• To clean the doors of the oven, use a damp cloth dipped in dry baking soda. Give it a wipe-down. If there are stubborn marks on the oven door, rub them gently with a fine steel wool.
